Party Ideas

If you are looking for a new craft project for your daycare, school, summer camp, senoir center or just to keep your kids busy today, this project just might just be the ticket. This craft project is sure to be an outlet for creativity and fun. When your finished you’ll have a cute glass case can be given as a gift and can be useful. It can even converted into a necklace purse if you so desire.

Here is a list of simple materials needed make the glasses case:

  • a square of craft foam sheet
  • plastic or large blunt needles
  • lanyard lace or thick yarn

Start by cutting two rectangles from the foam sheet, each rectangle should be 3-1/2 inches (9 cm.) by 6 inches (15 cm.). Take a hole punch, make holes on three sides of each rectangle, but leave one short side unpunched. Make the holes 1/2 inch apart and allow at least 1/4 inch between the hole and the edge of the craft foam, try to make it evenly spaced. The punch holes should line up so that the two pieces can be stitched together. If the craft project is for small children, an adult should make the holes. Otherwise, older children and adult crafters can do this step themselves if you have enough pairs of hole punches for everyone to use.

To spruce up the glass case cut out decorative shapes from different colors of crafting foam, or purchase pre-cut foam shapes. If you are doing this craft project for an event or class you can choose shapes with a theme to decorate with. For instance, if this close to a holiday you could choose to decorate with the holiday theme such as Easter Eggs/ Bunny for Easter, Christmas tree for Christmas, hearts for Valentine’s Day and so on. Let the creativity flow and see what happens when you let kids choose the shapes they like and glue on as desired, they’ll love it. You can add beads or sequins to add some sparkle as well. The older the crafter the more materials available will make it more fun for the crafter.

The next craft step is to thread yarn or lanyard lace through holes with the plastic needle. Lanyard lace is shiny but yarn is cheaper and a bit easier to handle. For small children a bobby pin can be used as a needle and is safer alternative for kids. Loop the yarn through the opening and using the open end of the bobby pin as the point of the needle. The crafter can now begin to lace the front and back of the glasses case together.

To turn this craft project into a necklace purse, attach a piece of lanyard lace to each corner making a long handle. It can also be used as a place to store secret notes and small objects, kids will love it. Or you can give the glasses case to a parent, grandparent, or friend who wears glasses as a gift. Either way, this craft project will be a smash for all ages.

Materials:Scarecrow Can

  • 2 large soup cans (clean)
  • Black spray paint
  • White material
  • Flannel/cotton plaid material
  • Yellow Wool
  • Jute
  • Straw Hat
  • Flowers and leaves
  • Black embroidery thread
  • Buttons
  • Hot glue and gun
  • Stuffing
  • Raffia (optional)

Start by painting two large soup cans with black spray paint and set aside to dry. Take plaid material and cut into two long rectangle shaped pieces for arms and legs. Fold and sew a seam down middle to make an open tube that can be stuffed and tied in three places. Tie one piece of jute at both end and one directly in the middle. A bit of raffia can be stuffed into the arm and leg ends to give a straw look. Cut a large round circle out of your white material for head (about 45 cm in diameter). Glue the top of one can and place a good amount of stuffing there for head and wrap white material on top with a piece of jute around to define the neck.  Glue arms on back of tin and legs on the inside of the bottom of the tin. Glue around the bottom rim of tin and place second tin underneath (like a seat) to help scarecrow sit nicely. Using the yellow wool to make a tuff of hair and glue down then glue on straw hat and accent with some leaves and flowers. Use buttons for eyes and “x” stitches sewn on with embroidery thread for mouth. Take a small piece of white material and make a yo-yo stuffed for nose then tack on with glue. You can add a bit of blush to cheeks for a rosier look.
